After a year of working undercover, Zap knew the routine. Cold coffee in Styrofoam cups. Warm sandwiches on dry bread. Music filtering from a nearby bar, background noise he hardly even noticed after a while. Hours of watching and waiting and not seeing much of anything.

Which meant this stakeout wasn’t different from any other.

Tossing aside a half-eaten cheese on wheat, Zap worked a kink out of his neck and tried to stretch his legs. It wasn’t easy. He was a couple inches over six feet tall and the close confines of the cab didn’t allow a whole lot of room for aerobics.

If there was one thing stakeouts should have taught him, it was that the best thing he could do—for his health, for his case, and for his leg muscles—was to learn when to call it quits. It wasn’t good for him, physically or mentally, to spend hour after unrelieved hour following a suspect. It wasn’t healthy, physically or mentally, to get so caught up in his work that he forgot to go home and eat a decent meal and get a good night’s sleep.

He’d tried. With every case, he’d done his best to remind himself that there had to be more to life than just pursuing the bad guys. There had to be a chance at the kind of life he wanted. A home. A family. A woman who could share his life and warm him through, body and soul.

But if there was one thing he’d learned it was that relationships didn’t survive in his line of work. Zap couldn’t help the little shiver that tingled along his shoulders. The women he’d met while he worked undercover weren’t exactly the type you brought home to Mom. Not anyone’s mom.

If nothing else, the experience had taught him a lesson. No matter how many times he’d worked to arrange a certain amount of R and R into his schedule, he knew it was impossible. Not when there were so many bad guys out there.

Which explained why he was parked outside Riley’s apartment building in the middle of the night.

Four days of following Riley had produced absolutely nothing. Nothing, until that afternoon when Riley stepped out of Merveilleux and fate intervened.

As he’d done a dozen times since it happened, Zap replayed the scene in his head.

Just as he’d been about to head off down the street after Riley, an ambulance came along. The street was narrow and Zap had no choice, he had to pull as far to the side as he could and let the ambulance pass. It was a good thing he did. Otherwise, he never would have seen Adam Lopresti.

A surge of excitement lifted Zap’s spirits, just as it had that afternoon. Lopresti was a small-time bad guy with a rap sheet as long as Zap’s
